CHAPTER 22

There, standing in their yellow and orange CFS uniforms were Atlas, and his boss, Candace, each carrying one of Sybil’s free milkshakes.

“Atlas!” called out Jones, running over to him. “But you’re in your uniform?” She was confused, but then realised, as soon as Christopher had given him the all-clear, he had headed straight back out to the fire.

At that moment Autumn slid through the front door. Jones presumed she had spotted them both from whatever vantage point she had been at.

“He sure is,” said Candace, pulling the door closed. “And he did an amazing job.”

Jones looked at the woman standing next to Atlas. At that moment she was very tempted to give her a piece of her mind. How dare she accuse Atlas of arson one day and then tell them all what they already knew, that yes, Atlas was amazing.

“Well, of course he did,” said Jones, slapping his arm. “Come on Atlas, come over and grab some food.”

Jones knew it was obvious she was ignoring Candace, and she didn’t care one bit. It was the least she could do.

Walking him over, Jones whispered, “Atlas, are you sure you’re ok? I mean, after this morning and everything?”

Atlas nodded. “Of course I am. And thank you. I know you were involved in getting Wren there.”

“I didn’t do a thing,” said Jones. “But Christopher, was he ok? He wasn’t too tough on you?”

“Not at all,” said Atlas. “Professional like always. Didn’t want to risk getting too personal in front of other people. And Wren kept things short and to the point of course.”

“Good, as she should. Who else was there?”

“A woman from Adelaide. A fire investigator, but she didn’t say much. Just stared at me the whole time with a frown on her face.

Jones smiled. “But you went back out to the fire? After everything?”

“Of course,” said Atlas. “I’ve got nothing to hide. Why shouldn’t I be out here?”

“Yes, you’re right,” said Jones. “Although I’d much rather you were safe here at The Memory Bank.”

Atlas laughed, and Jones left him to fill up on the platter that never seemed to diminish, no matter how much they all consumed.

Jones glanced around and was somewhat surprised to see Wren talking to Candace. She hoped it was with an investigative mindset and not simple chit-chat. Jones despite knowing nothing else about this woman, was utterly unimpressed with her at this stage.

“That woman,” said Autumn, her eyes boring a hole into Candace Chadwick.

“What are you doing? Get over there and listen,” Jones hissed.

Hugo was talking with Atlas, and Jones watched as he properly introduced him to his three friends. A lot of handshaking all round, and then it appeared the fellas had a lot of questions for the firefighter now in their midst. Jones smiled as she watched Atlas sit down and animatedly describe his day.

She noticed Prue must have snuck out, eager to get back to the office before official word came in. Jones would never understand that woman, but she supposed she couldn’t knock her work ethic.
